NewPoint Grinders - Gallery of Selected Drill Points

The following are just a very few examples of drill types commonly sharpened on NewPoint grinders.  All of these, and countless others, are ground with standard library programs, or with simple modifications of the standards.

Typical setup times for these drills:  Less than 1 minute.

Typical grind times:  Approximately 2 minutes.

Brazed Carbide S-Point Drill

S-Points are some of the most popular types of high-performance drills.  They come in high-speed and cobalt versions, solid carbide, brazed carbide tips, and even quick-change insertable tips.  The NewPoint grinders can sharpen them all.  This large drill was ground with a moderate s-curve and a very fine split point, for self-centering operations in steel.  The clearance contour blends smoothly across the carbide insert and the steel body.  Surface finishes are ideal for coating adhesion, which promotes long drill life.

Modified S-Point on Solid Carbide

The basic s-point can be modified and customized in countless ways to fine-tune drills for specific applications.  In this case, a flat facet (or land) is ground on a drill with a long, sweeping s-curve, and with unusual double-cut flutes.  The result is improved chip formation and chip breaking for a tough, stringy material.  The near-zero point split allows excellent self-centering action, and minimizes axial forces when drills are run in small, high-speed machines.

Custom 3-Flute Drill

The standard point on this tiny 3-flute drill was causing problems with hole size and location.  By modifying the point, splitting the drill closer to center, and grinding perfectly identical lip-heights on all three edges, the performance of the drill was improved dramatically.  A shallow-angle split increased strength behind the cutting edges, and prevented premature failures.

Carbide Helical Point Drill

On most grinders, helical points are some of the most difficult shapes to produce.  With NewPoint grinders, they're quick and simple.  All of the sweeping, curved surfaces are ground with a single, square-cornered, 1A1 wheel.  No dressing or formed wheels are required.  The point-ridge on the drill is formed by a perfect intersection of two contoured surfaces, and the finish allows ideal coating adhesion.
