This is part of a small air motor, approximately 1.25" in diameter, manufactured on a vertical machining center. The part has a milled slot, and a milled contour. The COVIS CCS tolerance zones allow all aspects of the milled shapes to be checked in a single glance. Zooming in for a better look at a suspicious area, shown below, we see that the lower left section of the outer controur is at or beyond the tolerance limit. Point-and-click dimensional measurements of the countour radius would determine the exact correction that needs to be made in the machine setup, or the CNC program. In addition to precise dimensional data, COVIS provides a wealth of qualitative information not available from gauges like optical comparators or CMM's. This workpiece, for instance, has a scar at its right edge, possibly from improper clamping. The center hole has apparently been damaged, and the surface is stained. The exact reasons for these problems can never be identified, and the problems never solved, if they remain undetected. COVIS is more than just a gauge. It's a powerful and versatile tool for complete quality control. |
